FIELD MEASUREMENTS DIFFERENT GUANELLAs

FIELD MEASUREMENTS:  1:1 Guanella Baluns

It seems most hams are crazy about Lab Measurements of baluns and chokes.

Not me!

Lab measurements of S21 on purely resistive loads are meaningless!

The Rubber Hits the Road in the Field, when the balun is mounted in an antenna.

Baluns and chokes react much different on reactive loads than they do on purely resistive loads!

In 2015/16 during my Battle of Baluns ("BoB") Field Test of baluns in an 80m OCFD antenna, I developed a suite of tests that enable me to evaluate the effectiveness of baluns in their ability to impede Common Mode Current.

In order to test my Hybrid-Balun using each of these four different 1:1 Guanella chokes, I mounted each choke, together with my 'standard' 4:1 Ruthroff balun in an 80m OCFD antenna which I am very familiar with, and ran my tests.

The results of these tests for each of the 4 Guanella baluns are shown on its own dedicate web page:

NOTE: Throughout this section of my web, whenever I state the value of the Common Mode Impedance of chokes or balun, it is based on the values shown in the color charts by Steve Hunt, G3TXQ (SK), published on his web, here: G3TXQ: RF-Chokes
